An A level Media analysis
Colour palette-The shot uses lots of green and grey tones to give the poster a mountainous tone, supporting the location of the Black Panther. The green can connote the colour of wealth and money which directly links to the wealth of Wakanda itself and their enhanced technological fictional city.Green also connotes wealth as its a recognised relation to emerald. The sky is blue which denotes good weather- typical to the continent and setting- Wakanda is a fictional African city. The blue sky creates a peaceful tone as the Black Panther is watching over and protecting Wakanda. The dark colours on the large statue of the panther can link directly to T'challa as the Black Panther which is foreshadowing
Lighting-the Black Panther is lit by the sun as he watches over Wakanda, this connotes that he is a God-like character. There is some partial cloud and mist over Wakanda which creates a sense of enigma. The City is the brightest image in the poster which connotes to us as an audience that this a good, light, nice place to be and a place where people can feel safe.
Costume-the Black Panther is dressed in black to anchor the title of the film and the symbol which it portrays. The costume embraces African culture and this is further denoted by other characters in the film. The costume is very futuristic, it is made by a strong material and is a special design for the Black Panther, it is skin tight to show off the muscles of the Black Panther (this is typical for superhero costumes). The use of the tight costume allows Chadwick Boseman to conform to the female gaze of being muscular as contemporary women find this attractive in men. Black is a dominating colour because it has the ability to make a bright scene appear darker, this connotes the dominance of the Black Panther. Black also connotes mystery which anchors the title 'Black Panther'. The Black Panther is wearing a mask which creates enigma about who the man behind the mask for those who haven't watched other Marvel films, but for the mainstream fans they would know that in the previous film Captain America: Civil War we would know who the man in the mask is as previously it was T'Chaka but after his death the legacy of the Black Panther fell to the next king in line T'Challa.
Setting-the Black Panther is standing on a statue of a black panther on a mountain, he is watching over the city of Wakanda. The city is built up and futuristic with vast towers. There are some spaceships flying over the city which further conveys the idea of Wakanda being futuristic. The city of Wakanda is surrounded by mountains which could act as a barrier or disguise, making the city hard to find. This creates an enigma surrounding the city which is linked to the identity of the Black Panther which is hidden by his costume and mask.
Iconography-the poster uses the Marvel Studios logo as a form of branding, audiences will immediately recognise and be drawn to the Marvel logo because of its vast popularity and status because of the huge success in which they have encountered. The Black Panther is standing on a statue of a black panther which is iconic to the character and connotes that the Black Panther is loyal, brave and fierce (the statue appears to be fierce based on the facial expression). The Black panther statue can also be recognised from the previous film Captain america:Civil War this is the cliffhanger clip we see before the film ends [the scene includes actors Chris Evans, Chadwick Boseman and Sebastian Stan]
Leading lines-the leading lines of the poster all point towards the city of Wakanda and the Black Panther. The statue takes up a large proportion of the poster and almost eclipses Wakanda, as if it is watching over the city to protect it (just as the Black Panther is). By using leading lines to direct the audience to the Black Panther it denotes that the Black Panther is the main character and hints at the narrative, the Black Panther must protect Wakanda in the film. The mouth of the Panther leads us to the city of Wakanda which is the main aim of the Black Panther to protect and maintain the prosperity and secrecy of the riches.
